What is wool fabric?
Wool fabric is a textile containing a significant proportion of wool fibre. Wool is a natural animal fibre valued for its thermal insulation, breathability, resilience and comfort.
Not every fabric in this category is necessarily 100% wool. Wool may be blended with polyester, viscose, polyamide or other fibres to alter durability, handle, drape and care properties.
Characteristics of wool fabrics
Wool fabrics can vary greatly depending on fibre type, yarn, weave, weight and finishing. They range from thick, compact and warm coating fabrics to fine, lightweight materials suitable for tailoring.
Key qualities include thermal insulation, breathability, resilience and comfort.
Wool fabric for coats
Wool fabric for coats usually has a higher weight, more body and greater insulation. Loden, felted-looking fabrics, tweeds and other dense wool qualities are particularly well suited to outerwear.
Depending on the individual fabric, they can be used for coats, jackets, capes, ponchos, blazers, waistcoats and winter accessories.
Wool coating: warmth, body and versatility
Wool coating fabric is one of the classic choices for outerwear. It often has a compact, even surface with enough body to provide structure to the finished garment.
Loden and Mouflon-style wool fabrics
Loden is a traditionally compact wool fabric that is finished to create a denser, more closed surface. The result is a warm, durable fabric with a slightly felted appearance, particularly suited to coats and jackets.
Some fabrics may also be marketed as Mouflon and can share similar appearance and uses. We group these qualities together because of their related characteristics and applications.
Wool tweed: texture and character
Wool tweed is known for its rich textured surface and visible interplay of yarns, colours and structures. It may feature melange effects, checks, herringbone, houndstooth and other traditional patterns.
Tweed is widely used for jackets, blazers, coats, skirts, dresses, trousers and coordinated outfits.
Bouclé wool: texture and volume
Our collection also includes bouclé wool fabrics, made with yarns that create small loops and irregularities across the surface, adding texture, volume and visual interest.
These fabrics are especially suitable for jackets, coats, blazers, skirts and garments where surface texture is intended to stand out.
What is lightweight worsted wool?
Lightweight wool for tailoring is very different from heavy winter coating. It is commonly made from fine worsted wool, resulting in a smooth, light and breathable fabric with a cleaner, drier handle.
Despite being wool, these fabrics can be comfortable in milder conditions and are particularly suitable for suits, blazers, tailored trousers, skirts, dresses and uniforms.
In some tailoring contexts, particularly lightweight warm-weather suitings, the term tropical wool may also be used.
Differences between coating wool, loden, tweed, bouclé and worsted wool
- Coating wool: generally heavier, warmer and more structured.
- Loden / Mouflon-style: compact, warm and slightly felted.
- Tweed: rich in surface texture and pattern.
- Bouclé: looped yarns create volume and texture.
- Worsted wool: finer, lighter and more breathable, ideal for tailoring.
